8:30AM – 10:20 AM: Introduction to Immigration Courts (2 CLE)

This training will cover the structure of immigration courts in the US including the composition and role of Immigration Judges, the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the core of the Department of Homeland Security.
10:30AM – 12:30PM Challenging Removal Allegations/Taking Pleadings (2 CLE credits)
Instructor: TBA
This training will cover the process of disputing allegations against a client in removal proceedings. It will provide an overview of the various types of actions that may be brought against the immigration authorities in U.S. District Court.
12:30PM – 01:30PM Lunch
01:30PM – 03:20PM Documentary Issues and Evidentiary Issues in Immigration Court (2 CLE credits)

This training will provide a basic overview of how and when the rules of evidence may apply in immigration court, what the evidentiary burdens are, and the type of evidence used to establish the most common requirements.
03:30PM – 4:30PM Motions Practice in Immigration Court (1 CLE credit)
Instructor: TBA
This training will give an overview of the various motions that may be made in immigration court, including motions for change of venue, for telephonic appearances, for adjournments, to accept late filed evidence, as well as to reopen and/or to reconsider cases.
04:30PM – 5:30PM Mock Intake Interview with Clients (1 CLE credit)
Instructor: TBA
This training provides an overview of how to conduct a consultation and initial intake interview with a prospective client The training will focus on interview techniques designed to elicit as much information as possible from prospective clients and spot potential issues. The training will also provide tips on how to handle difficult interviews, particularly with children and victims of violence.

08:30AM – 10:20AM: How to Present Testimony (Including telephonic) (2 CLE credits)

This training will provide an overview of how to effectively present testimony that is compelling and persuasive before the Immigration Court. The training will also cover telephonic testimony.
10:30AM – 12:30PM Brief Writing Before Immigration Agencies (2 CLE credits)
Instructor: TBA
This training will go over when and why a brief may be appropriate before both immigration courts and USCIS. It will also provide tips for effective brief writing.
12:30PM – 01:30PM Lunch
01:30PM – 04:30PM Mock Immigration Court Hearing (TO BE HELD AT 26 Federal Plaza, New York, NY. Room #:TBA)

Participants will have a chance to observe a mock immigration court hearing to see how proceedings typically unfold, and to see how problems can arise and are handled. Issues will be based on the topics covered in the first four days of training.
