Tools for Addressing Elder Financial Exploitation in Rural Areas

When: Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. PT / 2:00 p.m. ET.

Elder abuse is a growing issue faced by older adults, and the effects of abuse can negatively impact the physical health, mental well-being, and financial stability of victims. The challenges of elder abuse prevention, detection and litigation are heightened for older adults who are less connected to resources. Older adults who are isolated, either situationally or geographically, often have challenges accessing the help they need to prevent against and seek help following elder abuse.

Civil legal aid attorneys are uniquely positioned to deploy legal strategies and advocacy to mitigate the effects of abuse and help older adults attain the remedies they seek. With limited time and resources, attorneys benefit from practice guidance and outreach strategies for expanding the reach of their services.

This webcast will provide insight into the tools civil legal aid attorneys can use when advising and representing clients who have experienced financial exploitation, with a particular focus on strategies for reaching older adults in rural areas. Presenters will share information on new resources and highlight a statewide model from Maine that has expanded the reach of services and grown the network of people committed to identifying and addressing elder abuse.

Closed captioning will be available on this webcast. A link with access to the captions will be shared through GoToWebinar’s chat box shortly before the webcast start time.
