The Community Health Care Advocates (CHA)

Thanks for your interest in volunteering at Community Health Care Advocates!

CHA is New York Statefederally funded consumer assistance program.  As part of a grant, CHA operates a live-answer helpline at the Community Service Society of New York that is staffed by volunteers and supervised by full-time case handlers.  Together, you will work as a team to help people with questions and problems regarding health insurance and healthcare access.

Volunteers go through an intensive training where they are taught the basics of health insurance, both public and private.  Volunteers are also taught how to handle cases.  By the time a volunteer is taking their first call, they are armed with lots of information! Volunteers are never alone; they are always supported by the volunteer manager, who works with the volunteers to solve the cases that come in.

The helpline operates from 9-5, Monday-Friday.  CHA is seeking volunteers who can give an 8 hour weekly commitment, either as two 4 hour helpline shifts, one 8 hour helpline shift.  We are flexible on the scheduling, as long as you mostly stick to the schedule we decide upon.  We ask the volunteers be prepared to volunteer with us for a minimum of 6 months.

TRAINING DATES & TIME:

June 13, 2011, June 14, 2011 and June 15, 2011 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Volunteers to attend all three training dates.)

TRAINING LOCATION:

New York City: A brief brochure of the program will be sent via e-mail to all applicants.  CHA will contact all interested parties to discuss the applicant’s interest in the program, and to register for the training.

Registration:  Does this sound like something you are interested in making a six month commitment to and can make the eight hour a week commitment? If so please send a one-page resume and short cover letter explaining your interest in the opportunity (please no docx extensions) of why you are interested in the opportunity via e-mail to the Pro-Bono Chairperson at probono@nyc-pa.org
