Many low-income older adults reside in a home they inherited when a family member died. When a property is owned by multiple heirs, or any heir who has not yet filed legal documents to have their name reflected as the record owner, this is referred to as heirs property. Heirs property issues disproportionately impact older adults, as well as communities of color due to gaps in estate planning access. These communities face significant challenges to stable housing as a result.
Heirs property ownership creates a number of risks and challenges. In this webinar we will discuss how heirs property arises, describe the scope of the problem, and walk through legal strategies to help clients untangle or resolve heirs property, to prevent it from occurring, and above all, to prevent the loss of a family home.
