Immigration Navigator Training (full day training):
Intended primarily for non-attorneys, particularly staff and volunteers of organizations with little or no legal capacity, this training will provide instruction on the basics of immigration law, policy, and history, information-sharing best practices, document/evidence gathering, and general outreach strategies. Leaving this training, participants will be able to assist in the case management aspects of a variety of immigration cases, including naturalization, TPS, DACA, and generalized immigration legal consultations. The New York Immigrant Assistance Consortium (NYIAC)
This training is being jointly conducted by The New York Immigrant Assistance Consortium (“NYIAC”), a coalition of immigrant-serving non-profit organizations and other key stakeholders committed to providing high-quality assistance to immigrants in New York State. NYIAC believes that the coordination of efforts among New York’s immigrant-serving organizations will enable those organizations to:
§ reach the most people;
§ provide services in the most cost-effective manner;
§ minimize fraud; and
§ assure that immigrants are receiving the highest quality assistance that protects them and advances their rights.
We ask that those participating in this training become members of this coordinated effort and make a commitment to embrace the following principles:
NYIAC Statement of Principles
· Outreach and Education: Engage in coordinated NYIAC outreach programs designed to increase NYIAC membership and provide relevant populations with information regarding changes in immigration laws and policies;
· Open-source: Promote information and resource-sharing among NYIAC members pertaining to education, training, outreach, data collection and analyses related to legislative and executive actions;
· Best Practices: Coordinate with other NYIAC members to develop, implement and use innovative and efficient legal and social service models that promote best practices;
· Technological Effectiveness: Coordinate with other NYIAC members to develop, implement and use technological tools to expand the reach and effectiveness of immigrant services;
· Training :Help create, implement and use training and educational programs for service providers regarding immigration law and policy;
· Capacity-building: Commit to receive trainings and work towards building the capacity of member organizations in order to serve larger and more diverse immigrant populations;
· Excellence: Provide a consistent and high level of services to the immigrant populations they serve;
· Anti-fraud: Work to minimize incidences of immigration fraud and unauthorized practice of immigration law;
· Responsibility: Agree to utilize NYIAC tools and resources in a responsible fashion.
